Gopabandhu Institute of Medical Science and Research is a matchless organization, hallmarked for its dedication in the field of medical service and education basing on the thesis and thought of charity dedication and service to humanity.

The original source of idea/The founding idea:-

Utkalmani Pandit Gopabandhu Das, a freedom fighter and a dedicated social worker of Odisha founded the Samaja, a monthly news paper in 1919 to highlight the suffering and problems of the down troddens of the neglected Odisha under British regime. The newspaper became at once prominent and popular by its dauntless and truthful publication of news. On the eve of his death, Gopabandhu by a deed of will transferred the ownership of Samaja to Servants of the People Society who to look to its management. He further willed that the profits of the Samaja shall only be utilized for the benefits of the poors’ of Odisha for their educational and financial development. Relief to these poor and helpless people in case of natural calamities and sufferings due to diseases was specifically mentioned in his will. He died in 1928 a day after he signed the will.

Establishment of Gopabandhu Institute of Medical Science and Research:-

Servants of the People Society decided to establish an institution to permanently, definitely and categorically serve the poor patients and to take steps to spread medical education and research work in this neglected state of Odisha, where people are mostly backward both economically and educationally. Gopabandhu Institute of Medical Science and Research named after Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das, the founder of The Samaja had its foundation lying ceremony on 06.01.2002 by Sri Krishnakantji, President of SOPS and the then Vice-President of India. This grand ceremony was also graced by the esteemed presence of Sri Naveen Pattnaik, Chief Minister of Orissa as Chief Guest, Sri Devi Prasad Mishra, the then Minister Health and Sri Ranendra Pratap Swain, the then Minister of Sports & Youth affairs as hon’ble guest.
